Exercise Teen and Children - Getting an early start.

Exercise teen and children fitness information you want to know.

exercise teen - wall climbing"Change the world of a child, and you change the world..."

Giving your child an early start to exercise may make the difference between leading active lives in adulthood and living a sedentary lifestyle.

At least that’s what the current research is showing...

And it makes sense too. Childhood is a pivotal time for learning and nurturing all kinds of healthy, lifelong habits.

Exercise Teen and Children Physical Fitness: Enjoyment

If children learn to enjoy participating in various sports and activities at a young age, the likelihood that they extend these activities into adulthood is far greater than if they have never had any exposure to physical activity at all.

Provided of course, their experiences are positive ones- which brings me to the next important point...

Many parents unwittingly push their children into competitive sports and activities where the problem is further compounded by doubly competitive coaches and trainers whose primary focus is always on winning.

When you stumble upon this type of environment- performance rather than effort is rewarded. Consequently, naturally gifted kids tend to be favoured, which can inadvertently lead to negative experiences for some of the others.

When it comes to kids, the emphasis should not be on competition.
They'll have lots of time for that later.

The object is to learn true sportsmanship, develop new skills, build friendships, experience success, and feel good about themselves.

Encourage your kids to participate in a wide variety of physical activities.

Never lose sight of the fact that one of the most effective ways to influence those close to us is through our own attitude and actions.

If you’re physically active yourself, if you include your family in your activities, you’ll pass on these values seamlessly.

Other helpful things you can do are to offer praise, encouragement and to show interest. Perhaps get involved in your town’s physical activity programs. Try to provide needed transportation to facilitate your child’s participation.

Exercise Teen and Children Physical Fitness: Weight Training

Remember too, that a well-rounded youth fitness program incorporates all of the fundamental fitness training components.

This means that kids should train their cardiovascular system, muscular system, and their flexibility.

As a certified personal trainer with a specialization in youth fitness training, I can tell you one of the chief concerns of many parents is whether training for muscular strength with weights is safe for kids or not.

The concern stems mainly from a misconception that weight training stunts the growth of children.

Current findings suggest there exists no indication that weight training stunts the growth of children nor have there been any growth plate fractures reported in any youth weight training studies to date.

In fact, there is some research that shows that regular participation in weight training can have a favourable impact on bone growth and development when proper exercise guidelines are followed.

Indeed, the Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health (1996) recommends that children aged 6 years and older participate in activities that promote muscular strength and muscular endurance.

There is no minimum age for participation in weight training. However, the standard criteria is that the child should possess the emotional maturity to understand, accept and follow directions.

Generally, if your kid is mature enough to participate in a sporting activity, he or she can weight train.

Exercise Teen and Children Physical Fitness: Supervision

Perhaps the second most important guideline to abide by is that children and teens should not weight train on their own.

Even though the risks associated with weight training are no greater than those of other sports and activities, children and teens should be competently supervised and properly instructed at all times. A safe training environment is necessary to reduce the potential of accidents occurring.

Increasingly, medical professionals, fitness organizations, schools, recreation centres and youth camps are recognizing and endorsing weight training as a viable approach to enhancing muscular strength and muscular endurance.

In the pages ahead, you'll find youth physical activity recommendations, structured exercise guidelines for teenagers, and helpful teen fitness tips.
